Dementia Day Care Services in Philadelphia, PA

In Adult Day Care, Dementia, Seniors care

As we get older, our bodies and minds change. One of the most noticeable changes is our memory.

A little forgetfulness is normal as we age. If it doesn’t majorly affect your life, then it is not something to be worried about.

Severe loss of memory is not normal. It may be a sign of dementia.

At Mainline Adult Day Center, we offer our members daily interaction in a safe, secure environment to help reduce the effects of cognitive decline, whether due to normal aging or dementia.

What is Dementia?

Dementia isn’t a disorder or disease itself. Rather, it describes several symptoms associated with memory loss. Cognitive symptoms of dementia include:

  • Memory loss
  • Confusion
  • Disorientation
  • Difficulties reasoning/problem-solving
  • Difficulty communicating/finding words
  • Difficulty with visual/spatial abilities
  • Difficulty with coordination

Some psychological symptoms of dementia include:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Agitation
  • Paranoia
  • Personality changes

Forms of Dementia

Dementia occurs due to damage to or loss of nerve cells and neural connections in the brain. Many things can cause this damage to happen and lead to dementia. Here are some of the most common causes.

  • Alzheimers Disease: Alzheimer’s is the most common cause of dementia. It is caused by buildups of certain proteins in the brain that are thought to damage healthy neurons and neural connections.
  • Lewy Body Dementia: Another one of the most common forms of dementia. This is also caused by deposits of certain proteins in the brain. Aside from cognitive symptoms, Lewy Body Dementia can cause movement symptoms as well.
  • Vascular Dementia: The 2nd-most common form of dementia. Vascular Dementia occurs when blood vessels that supply the brain with blood are damaged. Stroke and atherosclerosis often lead to Vascular Dementia. Issues with problem-solving, thinking, organization, and focus are signs of this form of dementia.
  • Frontotemporal Dementia: This form of dementia is caused by the breakdown of brain cells in the frontal and temporal lobes of the brain. These areas are associated with controlling behavior, personality, and language, so this form of dementia may affect any combination of those 3 things.
  • Mixed Dementia: A combination of two forms of dementia. For instance, someone may have both Lewy Body Dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease.
